Where the places come from
In countries with postal data, places come from the GeoNames postal dataset, Japan Post or Google’s address metadata. Elsewhere they are GeoNames populated places with at least 500 inhabitants. Those include population figures, so you can filter for larger towns.
Coordinates mark the approximate centre of each place. They are rounded to three decimal places (about 100 m) and are not building locations.
Common questions
- Why is the population filter unavailable?
- Postal datasets do not include population. The filter works for countries whose places come from the GeoNames populated-places file.
- Are all towns included?
- No. To keep pages fast, each country file holds up to about 2,400 places, sampled across every region. Large countries therefore show a representative selection, not every village.
